Summer Movie Preview for 2014
Spring is here, but Summer will come before you know it. You know what that means, right? Summer Blockbuster season will be back at the movies. Last year had a series of disappointments and flops, ranging from After Earth to R.I.P.D. to White House Down, but those were hits compared to the massive disaster that was Disney’s The Lone Ranger, which lost more than $119 million at the box office last year (they would later recoup their losses with Frozen, a film that has now made over a billion dollars worldwide). Last season did have its hits however, three of which include Pixar’s Monsters University, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2, and Marvel’s Iron Man 3 This year will be even more unpredictable than the last. What movie will become a hit this year? What movie will flop? Only time will tell. Here are four movies that we’re sure will become big successes this year.
Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ken Watanabe, Warner Bros.’ reboot of the Japanese monster movie franchise will indeed bring new life to the Godzilla character, which had its last movie in Japan in 2004. After that, he was out of the spotlight for nearly 10 years, so there is no doubt this film will be to the Godzilla film series what 2009’s Star Trek film was to that franchise. Godzilla will be in theaters May 16.
2. Transformers: Age of Extinction
This movie (pictured above) will surely win big at the box office this summer, no surprise there since the last three Transformers movies won big money at the box office despite them all getting middling-to-negative reviews. Michael Bay is not what you’d call a critical favorite either, but his movies still sell tickets nonetheless. The original protagonist of the film series – Sam Whitwicky (played by Shia LaBeouf) – has been replaced by a new character, Cade Yeager, played by Mark Wahlberg. No doubt this film will make big bank at the box office. Transformers: Age of Extinction will be in theaters June 27.
3. Jersey Boys
Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial effort since his critically divided 2011 biopic based on the life of former FBI head J. Edgar Hoover, Jersey Boys is based on a broadway musical that tells the story of the world famous 60’s pop band The Four Seasons. It’s not known how this film will do at the box office, but Eastwood is a huge fixture for the Warner Bros. motion picture studio, so it will probably do pretty good. Jersey Boys opens June 20.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
This will no doubt continue Marvel Studios’ reign as a box office heavyweight. And, with big name stars like Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Glenn Close, and John C. Reilly, you know this one’s gonna be juicy good. Based on Marvel’s comic book series of the same name, the film focuses on a young pilot named Peter Quill (played by Pratt), who becomes the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb belonging to the evil Ronan. He later brings together a team of misfits who, upon knowing the great power that comes from this stolen orb, goes on a quest to save the galaxy from certain doom.
