OPINION: What If 20th Century Fox Were Hacked?
As everybody knows, Sony Pictures Entertainment was hacked, which resulted in leaks of various Sony ideas and screenplay drafts, including the first draft of the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre, film ideas such as an animated adaptation of Nintendo’s Mario video game series, and pirated copies of the upcoming contemporary remake of the 80’s musical, Annie. The most notorious leaks, however, were a racially charged E-mail conversation between two Sony executives talking about President Obama and “black movies” such as 12 Years a Slave and Django Unchained. The most embarrassing thing about these emails is these are the same people who donated at least $5,000 to Obama’s re-election campaign and $30,800 to the Democratic National Committee. But, liberal media outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and The New York Times will never report anything like that, neither will entertainment-centric publications such as Entertainment Weekly and The Hollywood Reporter. As a result, it gave me a theory. What if 20th Century Fox were in the same situation Sony is in right now?
As you may know, 20th Century Fox is a major motion picture studio located in the Century City section of Los Angeles, California. The studio has put a lot of well-known films and film franchises on the map, including The Sound of Music, the animated Ice Age, Star Wars (now owned by Disney), Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, and Night at the Museum. It was acquired by Rupert Murdoch in the 1980’s, who had remained the sole owner of the studio ever since. Who is Rupert Murdoch though? Well, he’s the guy that has a major media empire, including many newspapers such as the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal (both conservative publications, by the way), a broadcast network. a publishing company – HarperCollins – which has a lot of bestsellers, and of course the Fox News Channel, the most watched cable news network in America. Murdoch is a guy many people in the liberal media and liberal Hollywood like to pick on, which is why there have been many cheap shots against him in many network news and entertainment programming such as ABC’s Good Morning America (when the phone hacking scandal in the UK, which proved to be nothing but a witch hunt against him, was just breaking out), their now cancelled drama Boston Legal, and of course the Nickelodeon series (yes, a kids’ show) Victorious. There’s no question that if executives at Fox were to have the same email exchanges that these Sony Pictures employees had, there would be major uproar from the media and Hollywood. They only want to report on emails like this if the people they support are conservative politicians, and especially if the studio is owned by Murdoch of all people. Murdoch’s News Corporation, which has since split into two companies (21st Century Fox and News Corp.), have donated money to many conservative causes by the way. Because of that, if Fox execs were to engage in the same racially-charged E-mail conversation against Obama, there would be major uproar against Fox.
People like Murdoch are scorned by the media and Hollywood every day. Studios run by loyal supporters of liberal Democrats, like Sony Pictures Entertainment, are given a complete pass just because they donated money to Obama or the DNC. If it were a studio like Fox, which is owned by a guy who doesn’t want socialism to invade America, then there would be major backlash in Hollywood and in the media. There is no excuse for this kind of double standard, it is flat out disgraceful.
