OPINION: Target Caves Into Political Correctness

target-storefront1As many of you know, Target Corporation is removing “Boys” and “Girls” labels from their toy and bedding departments according to a report by The Washington Post. This controversy even caught the eye of Franklin Graham, the son of the legendary evangelist Billy Graham. Read what he had to say on a Facebook post this week:

Oh really? And they won’t be using pink and blue colors to identify sexes. I think Target may be forgetting who has made their stores strong. It’s not gender-neutral people out there—it’s working American families, fathers and mothers with boys and girls they love. What’s next? Are they going to try to make people believe that pink or blue baby showers are politically incorrect? I have news for them and for everyone else—God created two different genders. Jesus said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female (Matthew 19:4).

Graham couldn’t be more correct. This is by far the most outrageous corporate decision by a major retailer I’ve ever seen. Target is doing a disservice to traditional-minded people, and has decided to alienate a majority of their customers after caving in to just one angry progressive mom on Twitter. This is akin to NPR’s firing of Fox News contributor Juan Williams in 2010. Only 60 people gave complaints to NPR about Williams’ comments saying he gets nervous when he goes on a plane and sees people in Muslim garb. Unfortunately, this is the new normal here in America, thanks to radical progressive politicians taking over our way of life. However, this isn’t the only politically correct decision Target has made. In 2004, they decided to ban The Salvation Army from ringing bells in front of store entrances. Pretty dumb move if you ask me. Just last year, the retailer announced that guns would be banned from their stores… another example of caving into the vocal minority. And selling products themed about “gay pride”, an issue that isn’t supposed to be talked about to children until they’re at least teenagers, won’t be a problem with the media either. So it turns out that Target wants to be more “urban” unlike its larger Middle America-aimed counterpart, Walmart. As I told you in a previous blog, I don’t believe in boycotts. But, Target will now be one of the few exceptions. They will never see another dime from me personally, and they probably won’t see another penny from other conservative customers either. You see, not only is Target shoving their liberal ideology down our throats, they also sold products based on the erotic film 50 Shades of Grey next to children’s hygiene products.

As a company, Target has the right to do whatever it wants, but it does not have the right to force-feed ideology to the whole of the American public. This is why Walmart is more profitable than Target, and it’s also why I’m encouraging people to move to Walmart for their shopping needs. Target apparently has no shame. For the record, the CEO of Target – Bran Cornell – has said absolutely nothing about this decision. So, apparently he has no problem with it. And that tells you everything you need to know about Target Corporation.
