OPINION: Hollywood and Elitist Snobs

As much as Hollywood elitists, especially those working in an animation field other than CGI, had their fingers crossed about the animated family film Hotel Transylvania 2 – please don’t let it be a success, please don’t let it be a success – that’s what the film was. It grossed over $46 million domestically so far, and is currently the #1 movie in America. All that hoping and wishing is based on an insulting premise that middle America is a cesspool of people who don’t appreciate “smart” filmmaking about depressing issues no one wants to face. As Brent Bozell and Tim Graham point out in an article they wrote this past January about critics bashing American Sniper, movie studios often make syrupy liberal movies, and the left-wing critics immediately praise them right to the Oscars and the film history books.

Luckily the animation field is the only thing the Oscars usually get right most of the time (as CGI is as mainstream as wide-audience movies average Americans see can go), but it will only be a matter of time before the Hollywood elites decide that a movie almost no one will see gets the Best Animated Feature award at the Oscars next year. I hope I’m wrong. That new film? A stop-motion movie called Anomalisa, which will cover adult themes that no American wants to see tackled in an animated movie, let alone one made in stop-motion. Director/screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, who also wrote the script for the George Clooney film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, did a teaser for the film which bemoaned the modern filmmaking industry not making “smart” enough animated films that are more adult-oriented (in other words, films that are dark, depressing, and rated R).

One of the people who is also behind this film is Dino Stamatopoulos, the creator of the Christian-bashing claymation series Moral Orel. Like many liberals working in Hollywood, the people behind Anomalisa can’t seem to grasp reality. No one is asking to see a movie like this, because there is absolutely no market for this crap whatsoever. It’s about Hollywood making themselves happy because people are not falling for the garbage they pass as entertainment anymore. The reason why Hotel Transylvania 2 is successful is CG family films cater to a wider audience and deal with adult themes without having to be so depressing that it alienates children – period. It raises a question the Hollywood left will never ask: Why in the world is middle America so tired of the garbage we pass as entertainment today?

Middle America is much smarter than Hollywood thinks. They know that family movies and Christian movies make the most money, something Hollywood will never admit to themselves. I guarantee you that The Peanuts Movie, a 20th Century Fox production, will be yet another example of what I mean when it’s released in November – as will the new Disney-Pixar film The Good Dinosaur. None of that will matter to Hollywood though, the only thing that will matter to them is they can parade over their superiority over the rest of the country that makes them wealthy at the box office. I’m sure when Anomalisa is released, it will be yet another bomb that nobody wanted to see. It’s market economics.
