COLUMN: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Scandal’ Producer Doubles Down on Progressivism
As everybody knows, one of the biggest Trump-haters in Hollywood is television producer Shonda Rhimes, a fanatical progressive who has created the highly successful prime time soap operas Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal for the American Broadcasting Company. Ms. Rhimes is now admitting she is in a “trauma” as a result of her candidate in Hillary Clinton losing the 2016 presidential election.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said this regarding Ms. Clinton’s shocking loss:
There was a very specific planned progression that was going to be easy to tell because Hillary was going to be president, and we were going to be living in the light. But it didn’t occur. I’m still trying to come to terms with that. One bad thing after another keeps happening, and the world feels very unstable.
So according to Shonda Rhimes, the world is coming apart as a result of her candidate losing. This quote shows how out of touch she is with flyover country along with the rest of mainstream Hollywood, as does most of the dialogue and scenes that are put in Rhimes’ work.
From Grey’s Anatomy:
– Because she knows you, okay? So listen to the words that are coming out of her mouth and believe them. This is not a small thing. And I’m glad that you feel like you can talk to me about it, but… I-I don’t speak for all black people. I am not the spokeswoman. No one is. And it is kind of annoying to be asked questions like I am. But, um, one piece of advice that I can give you that I think we would all agree with is that if you feel uncomfortable having done it, check your white privilege, and don’t do it again. But I don’t think you’re racist.
– You don’t think?
– Girl, get in the car.
“A pressure point, soft tissue, an illness, an antidote to greatness.” You think you’re better off with people who rely on you, depend on you, but you’re wrong, because you will inevitably end up needing them, which makes you weak, pliable. Family doesn’t complete you. It destroys you.
Nothing needs to be restored. Nothing needs to be made great again. We are a better nation than we were 20 years ago. Than we were 50 years ago. Than we were 100 years ago. Than we were at our founding. That is the point of America. We are a country where we are always greater than our past. I am proud to live in a nation where a black man has a legitimate shot at the White House. That’s American greatness.
There is no doubt that a majority of entertainers working in Hollywood nowadays lean to the left, but it has become perfectly clear that Shonda Rhimes has been acting in an irresponsible way by using her shows to be extensions of her personal political views. The scene in Scandal in which the main character gets an abortion was also inappropriate, not to mention despicable seeing that it was set to the tune of a song celebrating Christ’s birth.
What is most concerning is Ms. Rhimes has a big platform at ABC when it comes to mainstreaming this kind of hateful nonsense. This should make Disney executives and shareholders very concerned (of which I am a shareholder), but it thus far remains unaddressed. The kind of content Ms. Rhimes is allowing is not on some hateful lunatic-fringe website like the Daily Kos, Salon, or InfoWars, she’s writing them for scripted programming airing on an over-the-air broadcaster owned by one of America’s most iconic media and entertainment conglomerates.
Disney’s reputation mainly counts on American families whose kids love fairy tales, cartoons such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, or any of the company’s theme parks around the world. Yet, ABC (and cable networks ESPN and Freeform to some extent) is allowing people like Rhimes to promote their orgy of sleaze and leftist lunacy on Thursday nights, aimed at mainly low information viewers.
As noted many times before, this is a major problem for Disney or any company that began as one focused on family entertainment. The company needs to tell Ms. Rhimes that the kind of propaganda she allows on her shows will alienate potential audiences if they are blatant in force-feeding any kind of political agenda – right or left. We’ll see if they do just that.
