COLUMN: More Proof Hollywood is Corrupt
This week, Kim Masters of The Hollywood Reporter and 41-year-old actress Rashida Jones tag-teamed to smear John Lasseter, the co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios and the chief creative officer of feature animation at The Walt Disney Company. Jones claimed that Lasseter didn’t hire enough women and people of color while working on Toy Story 4, while THR says he was harassing her as well as other women. To Jones’ credit, she debunked the Reporter‘s false claims. But in this internet age, the worst of defamation gets a huge amount of exposure. And as a Disney stockholder, I have to defend Lasseter this week – despite his personal decision to take a leave of absence from Disney.
Obviously, Masters thinks that giving hugs and just being nice to people is considered misconduct. And in Jones’ case, Lasseter is considered a racist and a sexist because he has creative differences with her. I don’t know John personally, but here’s what I do know about him. He’s an incredibly gifted artist, and an ambitious one at that.
Beginning his career at Disneyland on their Jungle Cruise attraction while a student at CalArts, and moving on to what is now Walt Disney Animation Studios in the early 80’s, he pitched an idea to create a feature film using a combination of hand-drawn animation and CGI called The Brave Little Toaster, and ended up getting fired for it. It led him to join the computer graphics group at Lucasfilm – which would later be spun off into what we know today as Pixar.
The group he helped build ended up being put on the map when Toy Story became a massive box-office hit in 1995, and the success with apolitical animated movies that are universally loved by generations of families has not stopped since then.
He also has a wife and kids, and is completely dedicated to them as well as his job at two iconic animation houses. It’s a miracle this just popped up so late in the year, all because a far-left journalist and a race-baiting Hollywood elitist who obviously also believes the conspiracy theory of Russia stealing the election put this trash out to the public.
And guess what? Nothing is going to happen to either Kim Masters or Rashida Jones. Neither of them could care less about the truth. They’re both in the business to slander, and are on an Orwellian witch hunt. At this point, TV coverage has largely been scant, especially at sister operation ABC News. That in itself is shocking, because the guy running ABC – Ben Sherwood – is yet another far-left zealot using his news and entertainment operations to promote his left-wing agenda.
As for this writer, I knew this story was bogus from the start. It is my belief that THR was trying to take the controversies surrounding Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein and wrap it around Lasseter’s neck for partisan reasons because he actually respects Walt Disney’s legacy of family entertainment. In addition, he is one of the most successful people working in the animation business, with Pixar having the most consistant number of critical and box office hits any studio in the history of the American film industry would die to have.
The Hollywood Reporter, Kim Masters, and Rashida Jones are clearly out for blood. They must think people in Middle America are dumb when they’re really tuning out of their dirt. This whole controversy reminds me of another woman who tried to destroy a public figure’s reputation and totally got away with it. That woman is Anita Hill, who in 1991 accused now Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. More than a dozen women denounced these allegations, and Justice Thomas ended up being able to sit where he currently resides.
Being the desperate bomb thrower she was, Hill wouldn’t retract her allegations and smears, and I’m sure Masters won’t retract hers either. And what happened to Anita Hill? She was rewarded with a lionizing HBO movie based on her life.
