NBCUniversal and Corporate Leftism
Since the election of Barack Obama back in 2009, the NBCUniversal media conglomerate – at the time owned by General Electric – has gone further and further to the left. Unfortunately, nothing has changed since the conglomerate’s 2011 sale by GE to cable communications giant Comcast, perhaps best known for its Xfinity TV and internet service.
Readers may remember when Media Research Center founder and president Brent Bozell and executive editor Tim Graham told you about the Focus Features arthouse film studio doing a glowing biopic of liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in an column talking about CNN’s gushing documentary about her. But the leftism doesn’t stop there.
The company will be doing this kind of shtick like never before this midterm election season. Here are three example of this…
Number 1: Universal Pictures – the conglomerate’s flagship film studio – is releasing a new movie called First Man, based on the life and career of astronaut Neil Armstrong. The film, which is being directed by Damien Chazelle of La La Land fame, omits one of the most important aspects of Armstrong’s legacy, planting the American flag on the moon. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph of Britain, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling – who plays Armstrong – went globalist on his audience and defended this decision by saying the mission “transcends countries and borders.” He went on to say this:
I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that’s how we chose to view it. I also think Neil was extremely humble, as were many of these astronauts, and time and time again he deferred the focus from himself to the 400,000 people who made the mission possible.
There’s no question that this movie will alienate a majority of Americans who may have been interested at first, but Gosling and co-star Jason Clarke don’t seem to care. Clarke in particular lashed out at those who are outraged by this decision by saying it was “silly and naive” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
It’s just silly and naive I think,” said Clarke, who portrays Edward Higgins White, the first American man to walk in space. “Of course it celebrates one of the greatest acts of America and Americans and humanity and mankind.
But, it’s mainly an American achievement. Clarke, Gosling, and Chazelle ought to be ashamed of themselves. In addition to Gosling and Clarke claiming that walking on the moon was mainly the achievement of “humanity” rather than the US, Chazelle was also on Twitter attacking President Trump and asking his followers to donate to Planned Parenthood and Black Lives Matter. The arrogance of all three of these individuals is horrifying.
It’s especially disappointing to see Chazelle in particular sink to this level, his movie La La Land was an incredible movie, and the fact that he made this decision – as well as use social media to promote far-left advocacy – sunk a lot of the universal (no pun intended) appeal First Man could have had.
Number 2: NBCUniversal’s cable channels division has teamed up with progressive groups like the Anti-Defamation League, Civic Nation, and others for a social justice campaign called Erase the Hate. There’s no question that this campaign will incite social tensions to worsen in this country, but the company – being the liberal ideologues they are – doesn’t seem too concerned.
In addition, they even got their year-old kids’ channel, Universal Kids, involved with the race-baiting as well. Since Universal Kids is in competition with the likes of Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, that in itself is disgraceful. Talk about getting the young ones at an early age.
Number 3: The NBC family drama This is Us will be going political in its third season. You may remember when earlier this year, star Mandy Moore actually politicized the show by making it about the president, and now the writers have decided to finish the job. Whether or not it will lean left isn’t clear, but odds are it will indeed delve into far-left talking points.
So, from these instances, the battle lines have been drawn. Whether it may be motion pictures, “news”, or prime time, NBCUniversal has chosen sides, and that side is against anyone and everyone with a conservative or libertarian point of view. Keep that in mind next time you pay your Comcast cable bill or plan on going to any of the Universal Studios theme park destinations in Orlando or Los Angeles on your next vacation.
